Watta Wella Renewable Energy Project

A new renewable energy project in Australia

Watta Wella Wind Farm

The proposed Watta Wella Wind Farm is located approximately 16 kilometres north east of Stawell, in the Northern Grampians Shire Council area.

Watta Wella Wind Farm will have a capacity of approximately 376 MW and at this early stage of planning would include up to 47 wind turbines. The proposed site extends over 5,200 hectares of land predominately used for grazing and cropping.

Watta Wella Wind Farm is expected to generate enough electricity to supply around 190,000 Victorian homes.

The proposal is for a wind farm which will consist of the following components:

  • Wind turbines, with associated hardstands and access roads;
  • Underground electrical cable reticulation to connect the turbines back to the substation;
  • Operations and maintenance building with associated car parking;
  • An electrical substation and switching station;
  • Meteorological masts for measuring wind speed and other climatic conditions; and
  • Temporary construction facilities including a construction compound, borrow pit and concrete batching plant facilities.

The design will be shaped by a number of detailed technical, engineering and environmental studies and assessments which include:

  • Ecology- Flora and Fauna;
  • Landscape and Visual;
  • Noise;
  • Historic Heritage;
  • Cultural Heritage Management Plan (CHMP);
  • Bushfire Risk;
  • Electromagnetic Interference Studies (including TV and radio reception);
  • Shadow Flicker and Blade Glint;
  • Aviation;
  • Solar Glare;
  • Agricultural;
  • Access and Transport;
  • Geology and Hydrology; and
  • Socioeconomic.

RES values community engagement and is committed to consulting with the local community and a wide range of stakeholders to provide information on the project and to seek valuable input on community benefit sharing options.

Consultation activities may include:

  • Community Information Days;
  • Project update newsletters;
  • One on One meetings with adjoining residents (face to face or remotely); and
  • Community Liaison Meeting (following planning approval).
